How to value an .ai domain

Four inputs drive the number: length, pronounceability, category fit, and recent comparable sales. Everything else — algorithmic appraisals, registrar estimators, generic valuation tools — systematically undervalues premium .ai.

Length: under 8 characters is the premium tier

Five- to seven-character SLDs anchor the top of the market. Each additional character past eight reduces clearing price roughly 30–50% in same-category comparables. One-character and two-character .ai domains exist but rarely transact publicly.

Pronounceability: real word > phonetic invented > consonant cluster

A real English word .ai (e.g. Spark.ai, Lens.ai) is the top tier. A phonetic invented word (Mistral.ai, Cursor.ai-style) is the second tier. Three- or four-letter consonant clusters (XQR.ai) price materially lower because they can't carry a brand without ad spend.

Category fit: does it map to a funded AI vertical?

A .ai that reads as a category name (Voice.ai, Code.ai, Search.ai) compounds value because multiple funded buyers compete for it. A .ai that doesn't map to a category (random invented word with no semantic anchor) sells at the brandable invented tier — strong but not category-leader pricing.

Comparables: use 3–5 recent .ai sales, not an algorithm

The honest appraisal is the median clearing price of 3–5 .ai domains sold in the last 18–24 months with similar length, pronounceability, and category. Algorithmic tools don't have this data; brokers who close .ai transactions do.

For a comparable-driven appraisal, talk to a broker. For tier-by-tier price bands, see .ai domain price bands.

Why GoDaddy/Estibot numbers are 80–95% too low

Automated tools were trained on .com sales corpora. The .ai buyer pool — AI-funded startups with category-defining naming pressure — doesn't appear in that training data. Expect any algorithmic .ai appraisal to read 5–20x below what a funded AI buyer will actually pay.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most accurate way to value a .ai domain?
Pull 3–5 comparable .ai sales from the last 18–24 months with similar length, pronounceability, and category fit. Use the median clearing price as your anchor, then adjust up or down for syllable count and brand strength. Avoid algorithmic appraisals — they're trained on .com and miss the .ai premium.
Why do automated appraisal tools undervalue .ai domains?
GoDaddy, Estibot, and similar tools were built on .com sales data. Their models don't know that an AI-funded buyer will pay 10–50x what a .com buyer would for the same string, because the .com sales corpus doesn't contain those buyers. Expect their numbers to be 80–95% too low for premium .ai.
What's a brandable .ai domain worth in 2026?
Rough bands: long-tail two-word .ai $1K–$10K, pronounceable two-word .ai $10K–$50K, brandable invented one-word .ai $25K–$250K, real-word one-word .ai $100K–$1M, category-leader brand-matched one-word .ai $500K–$5M+. Adjust for syllable count and category fit.
Does .ai length matter as much as .com length?
More. Because .ai already adds 3 characters (.ai vs .com is the same length but feels longer in spoken use), the SLD ideally stays under 8 characters for premium pricing. A 5-character pronounceable .ai prices materially higher than an 8-character one with otherwise equal qualities.
Should I get a professional .ai appraisal?
If you're selling above $50K, yes. A broker who actually closes .ai transactions has access to non-public clearing prices and knows which buyers are currently funded for which categories. An algorithmic number doesn't help in a negotiation; a comparable-driven number does.
How do I find comparable .ai sales?
NameBio tracks public escrow records. Many premium .ai sales aren't disclosed, so combine public data with broker outreach. A working broker can usually share 3–5 relevant comparables under NDA when discussing a specific name.
